Given the prevalence of gangs, drugs, and crime in even the smallest US cities, kids don't have to travel far to find a world of negative distractions. Luckily for one San Francisco neighborhood, kids are finding a creative way to focus their energies -- by making urban electronic music.

Founded in November 2000, the Horizons Unlimited DJ Project is headed by its program director Jeff Feinman.

"The DJ Project is basically a youth-driven music program that uses music and taps into the youths' interest in music to create positive life choices for the kids and to give them training and technology, and project management and different job-readiness skills," Feinman says.

"Juan Guillermo was the first member of the DJ Project. I saw Juan go from 'Hey, how do I turn on this record player, how do I handle these records?' to creating his own compositions from start to finish."

Guillermo says, "All the software and all the equipment that you learn in four years of music school, I learned in just two years of the DJ project."

And as the students' knowledge grows, so must the DJ Project. The organization accepts donations of cash, musical gear, computer equipment, software and Internet access, furniture, and more. It is also looking for musicians and computer and music techs to volunteer. To make a donation, to volunteer, or to find out more about the project, here is the contact info:
